    Heightened Threat Levels In Europe

Desde américa llega esta noticia con no poco sentido del humor…

    US News Item -

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666.

Also, the French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Surrender" and "Collaborate." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France’s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability.

It’s not only the English and French that are on a heightened level of alert as Italy has increased her alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans have also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose."

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs come equipped with glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

    Spain is different…

Filed under: la visión de Winston, in english

Because I know that some non Spanish speakers that I met in the last months (and others that are interested in knowing a bit more about the situation of Spain and about some of the topics that we talk about in this web page), I’m going to try to explain the political and social situation of Spain in the last days after the terrorist attack of the 30th of December of 2006.

Nine months ago the terrorist group ETA, who has been killing people since 30 years ago (almost one thousand persons have been murdered by them), announced a stop in their military activity against the democracy. The government of Mr Zapatero, the prime minister who got the power because of another terrorist attacks on March of 2004 with two hundred people dead, three days before the general elections, accepted with a big smile the announcement of the terrorists and broke the pact for the freedom against the terrorism signed with the "Partido Popular" a few years ago… This pact, which was proposed by Zapatero when the last prime minister, Mr. Aznar, was on the power in the 2000, said that the two most important political parties of the country (the only political options for governing Spain), those who accepted the constitution and the laws, were supposed to work together and never negotiate with the terrorists any more because in the short democratic history of our nation they had showed to the democracy that the only thing that they have been looking for is to murder and to kidnap people and also because the other truces that they had announced were completely false…

Anyway the new government, who has a political pact with the most radical parties of the country since the elections of 2004, like the independentists of Catalonia, or the communists of IU, didn’t respect the pact and started the conversations with the murderers… There were a lot of meetings of the association for of the victims of the terrorism against this conversations, thousands of hundreds of persons went to the streets of Spain for screaming to Mr Zapatero and to his government that we were not in favour of what they were doing, but they didn’t listen to us and to the opposition party either…

Even with the opposition of the victims and of millions of persons, the government continued saying that the conversations with the terrorists were fine, and necessary for the peace… I think that it’s important to say that the pact against the terrorism become the terrorist band ETA, in 5 years only, almost a dead band… In 2000, after another false stop of the band, the murderers killed 20 people, in the 2004 none person was dead because of the police and the political activities against them… These activities were finished with the beginning of the chats a few months ago.

The band, as always, has used the truces for becoming stronger and more powerful, but only the French police accepted that after the terrorist attacks of the 30th it happened in Spain again. Our government, the government of the peace and the dialogs with the terrorists, has not accepted this to the public opinion of Spain already. The attempt, which cost the life of two persons the other day is just the beginning of what is coming, because the band is much stronger now… What can we do? What is the president of the government supposed to do in this situation when he has been totally wrong all this time? Some people here have been telling him that he was absolutely wrong all the time, but now is the moment that there are not more conversations with the ETA and now is the moment of the true… What would happen in the rest of the countries of the world in the similar situation? Well, I can imagine what would happen in a normal nation… But for sure that nothing is going to happen here because, as we usually say… Spain is different…
